  1. The minimum amount of damage that is required to report a property damage accident was changed from $600 to $1000 on August 1, 1991. The change is important to remember when you compare the data from 1991 to the data of earlier years.

  3. The numbers listed for 1991 indicate the total of 1-year registrations issued during the year. In 1992 the NYS DMV began to issue 2-year registrations. The method used to report motor vehicle registrations was also changed. The numbers listed for 1992 and later years show the total number of registrations that were in effect (registrations in force) during the year. The difference is important to remember when you compare the data from 1992 and later to the data of 1991 and earlier years.

  5. In April 1997, a change in the Vehicle and Traffic Law authorized police officers to report any accidents that cause damage of more than $1,000 to the property of one person. The police officer estimates the property damage and reports the accident on a Police Accident Report (MV-104). The amendment to the law has caused the number of reported property damage accidents to increase in 1997 and later years.
