Can I use this online transaction if I changed my mailing address?

Your mailing address on file with the DMV must be your current mailing address. You cannot change your address during this transaction. You can first change your address online, and then process this transaction.

If you file a request with the US Postal Service (USPS) to forward mail there, is no guarantee that the USPS will forward all DMV documents to the new address.

Can I use this online transaction if I changed my name?

Yes, but the new document will then display your previous name. You cannot change your name during this transaction. If you recently changed your name, read the instructions to change your name on DMV documents and DMV records.

I did not receive a renewal notice in the mail. Can I renew my registration online?

If the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is because of a mail delivery problem or a production problem at the DMV, you can normally renew online. You cannot renew your registration online if the reason you did not receive a renewal notice is:

The transaction displays an error message if your registration is not eligible to be renewed or cannot be renewed online.

Can I renew online if my registration has expired or will expire during the next 10 days?

Yes. After your online renewal is processed, you can download and print a temporary certificate of registration in PDF format. The temporary certificate is valid for 10 days from the date of the transaction. The temporary certificate cannot be transferred.

Can I renew my registration early?
Why do I receive an error message that informs me that I cannot renew early?

You can renew your registration a maximum of 60 days before the expiration date. You cannot renew your registration more than 60 days before the expiration date; you will receive an error message that explains that you cannot renew early.

You can also receive the error message that it is too early to renew your registration if select the button that displays the words "Submit My Order" more than one time during the online renewal transaction. Select the button only one time.

What is the temporary certificate of registration? Do I need to print the temporary certificate of registration?

At the end of your transaction, you will have the option to download and print a temporary certificate of registration. The temporary certificate is only valid when used along with the current registration sticker. The temporary certificate allows you to continue to operate for up to 10 days while your new registration is delivered by mail.

You only need to print and use the temporary certificate if your current registration is expired or will expire within 10 days of the date of your online renewal.

How long will it take to receive my new documents?
Can I have my document sent via an express mail service?

You can download and print a temporary certificate of registration at the end of your transaction. The temporary registration is valid for 10 days and is not transferrable.

Allow at least 10 days to receive your new documents by mail. Express mail delivery service is not available.

What are the hours for this online transaction?

This transaction is normally available 24 hours each day.

The DMV normally processes online transactions immediately. If the DMV cannot immediately process your transaction, you will receive a confirmation that the DMV "received" the information that you entered. The DMV will process your transaction on the next business day, and will send an e-mail message to confirm your transaction was processed.

Does the DMV charge an added fee to use this online transaction?

There is no additional cost or fee to use this online transaction. You pay the same fees that you would pay if you did the same transaction by mail or at a DMV office.

How do I pay for this online transaction?

You must use a credit card or a debit card to pay for this transaction online. The DMV accepts these credit cards:

American Express Card Discover Card MasterCard VISA Card

You can use a debit card if the debit card was issued by MasterCard® or VISA® and the card does not require a personal identification number (PIN).

Is this online transaction secure? How does the DMV protect my personal information?

The DMV uses secure socket layering (SSL) to protect your information. The DMV encrypts your credit card information and your personal information so other Internet users cannot read the information. Read the DMV Privacy and Security Statement.

How will I know the amount that the DMV charged to my credit card?

The online transaction shows you the amount of your payment before you submit your payment. If you do not submit your payment, the DMV will not charge the amount to your credit card.

After the DMV processes your payment, you will see the amount of the payment in the confirmation messages from the DMV and on your credit card statement.

Why do I need a Confirmation Number?
How will I know if the DMV processed my transaction?
Will I receive a receipt or other proof that the DMV processed my transaction?

You will need your confirmation number if you contact the DMV about your online transaction. After you select the button to submit your payment, a confirmation message will appear in your browser window. The confirmation message contains your Confirmation Number and other information about your transaction.

The confirmation message can take several seconds to appear. If the message does not appear immediately, do not select the button to submit your payment again. If you select the button more than one time, you can receive an error message.

When the confirmation message appears in your browser window, write your Confirmation Number on a piece of paper.

You can also print the confirmation page and print a temporary certificate of registration in PDF format. The temporary certificate is valid for 10 days and is not transferrable.

After you submit your payment, you will receive an email message that includes your Confirmation Number.

Can I cancel this online transaction?

No. You cannot cancel this online transaction after you submit your payment. If you want a refund of the renewal fees for a registration you will not use, complete form MV-215 (Request for Refund) and submit the form with the unused boat registration sticker and document.
