Most positions in the DMV are filled through competitive exams. State agencies use the resulting eligible lists to hire people. Therefore, you cannot simply apply for most positions at NYS Department of Motor Vehicles unless you are sent a canvass letter that results from your name appearing on an eligible list.
However, if you are certified through the Workers with Disabilities Program (55-b) or the Veterans with Disabilities Program (55-c), you may send in your resume, along with a Civil Service letter confirming your certification with this program, to the NYS Department of Motor Vehicles. For more information about the certification process, visit the Department of Civil Service Workers with Disabilities
Web page.

After the exam is given and the resulting lists are established, agencies canvass active eligibles when they have an opening. After the hiring freeze ends, state agencies may be using those eligible lists at a more rapid pace to fill jobs.
