Out-of-state drivers

The LENS program can notify you only of events on New York State driver records. For complete information, you will need to contact the driver's home State for its record.

To see if a NY license / ID number has been assigned to your out-of-state driver, please email DMV with the driver's name, date of birth and state they're licensed in. If we find a license / ID number, we'll send it to you and you can add it to your roster.

LENS can notify you of an event on a record belonging to a driver licensed by another state if:

  • The driver was convicted of a violation within New York State

When a driver visiting NY State accrues a conviction, we will search for an existing NY State record and add the conviction to it. If none exists, we will create a new record for the driver to denote the conviction. The new records will include the notation “NO NY LICENSE.”

  • The driver’s New York State driving privilege has been suspended

When a driver visiting NY State fails to answer a summons from a court in NY State, the court may direct us to suspend the driving privilege.  We will search for an existing NY State record and suspend it. If none exists, we will create a new record for the driver to denote the suspension. The new record will include the notation “NO NY LICENSE”. We will also notify the driver’s home State of the suspension.
