NEW YORK STATE DMV HIGHLIGHTS DATA AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC ON OPEN NY
Agency Offers More Than 30 Data Sets on Open NY, a User-Friendly Portal of Government Records

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today reminded New Yorkers of the agency’s data sets available to the public on Open NY, the state’s user-friendly portal of government records. Motorists can browse through and easily filter simple lists of dealerships, repair shops, licensed DMV facilities, and most popular vehicle makes and colors across the state, or lengthy sets of information about vehicle registrations and tickets.

“DMV is proud to offer up more than 30 data sets on Open NY, and continues not only to refresh information regularly, but to add new categories of data that makes information easily accessible to the public,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “We are proud to follow Governor Cuomo’s lead in making government more accessible, more modern, and more efficient.”

The Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) also recently announced the creation of a new online data system to provide the public with direct access to New York State’s traffic safety data for the first time ever. The database, or Traffic Safety Statistical Repository (TSSR), integrates data from the state’s major crash reporting system and speeds up the process of obtaining data for the public while allowing users to customize reports. The project was designed and implemented by the University at Albany’s Institute for Traffic Safety Management and Research (ITSMR).

In addition to data on Open NY and TSSR, DMV’s website contains fact sheets of crash data compiled from crash reports submitted to DMV by motorists and police agencies, which are released after a complete calendar year is compiled. The website also contains the number of all New York State driver licenses on file in 2015 listed by county and by gender, and the number of all New York State vehicle registrations considered active in 2015 listed by county and type of registration.

The following are data sets currently available from DMV on Open NY:

Governor Cuomo signed Executive Order 95 in March 2013, which recognized that government’s responsibility to provide information to the public through affirmative disclosure has changed in the digital age. The order required for the first time that New York State agencies continually review and catalogue their data for publication in an open format online. It further required the State to create and maintain a website that provides, organizes, and makes searchable open data.
