Change information on DMV documents

You must visit your local DMV office to change your name or other non-address information on DMV records and documents.

Driver license, permit or non-driver ID 


Change name 

To update a legal change of name on DMV records, bring these items to DMV office 

When you change your name on your driver license, permit or non-driver ID, you must update your photo.

Change other information 

You must visit your local DMV office and bring proof of the change.  For example, if your date of birth is not correct, bring proof of age as listed on Proofs of identity and date of birth for NYS driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID.

For amended permit or license: $12.50

For amended non-driver ID card: $5.00  3


Correct an error

If  we made an error on your document, use the Ask DMV a Question service to request a correction. We may be able to correct it without you coming to a DMV office.  There is no fee for a correction.

You must go to a DMV office. 

When you renew

  • there is no additional fee to update your photo

When it is not time to renew

Bring to a DMV office

 

Your new document will come in 2 weeks

We will give you a temporary non-photo driver license, learner permit or non-driver ID at the DMV. You will receive your new document in the mail in about 2 weeks.

Death of a family member

If your loved one has passed away, please mail a copy of the death certificate to the DMV to prevent further mailings or identity theft.

Fee

There is no fee to change your name on your registration documents and title certificate.  


When you will get your new registration and title

We will give you new registration documents immediately when you apply. Allow 60 to 90 days for your new title to arrive in the mail.

 

Correct an error

If  we made an error on your document, use the Ask DMV a Question service to request a correction. We may be able to correct it without you coming a DMV office.  There is no fee for a correction.

  • 1.

    Regardless of the genders of you and your spouse, if your marriage certificate shows both your spouse's surname and your former surname, you may

    • change your middle name to your former surname or
    • chose a different middle name and
    • change your surname to your spouse's surname

     

  • 2. This can be in the form of a written statement from a physician, psychologist, psychiatrist or other appropriate professional that is printed on letterhead. The statement must certify that one gender is your main gender and that you identify as male or female. An appropriate professional can include but is not limited to a Life Counselor, a Clinical Social Worker or other professional who is overseeing the change in gender.
  • 3. If you have a 10-year non-driver ID, are age 62 or older and a recipient of Supplemental Security Income (SSI) there is no fee.
  • 4.

    Regardless of the genders of you and your spouse, if your marriage certificate shows both your spouse's surname and your former surname, you may

    • change your middle name to your former surname or
    • chose a different middle name and
    • change your surname to your spouse's surname
