New York State driver license types and classes

New York offers three types of driver license documents

Only Enhanced used for U.S. land border crossings. Only Enhanced and REAL ID used to board a domestic flight, federal building, military base. Standard only used for ID purposes. Enhanced show flag. REAL ID show star. Standard say NOT FOR FEDERAL PURPOSES

*If your license was issued before October 30, 2017 and is not Enhanced, you have a Standard.

  • Passenger cars and trucks with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR)  of 26,000 lbs. or less. 
  • A vehicle that tows another vehicle (for example a trailer) that has a maximum gross weight of 10,000 lbs. or less.
  • Can tow a vehicle with a GVWR of more than 10,000 lbs only if the combined weight rating of the two vehicles is 26,000 lbs. or less.
