Media Advisory:
Southern Tier and Northern Tier Law Enforcement to
Join Forces to Carry Out Seat Belt Laws and Save Lives

In 1984, New York became the first state in the nation to pass legislation requiring drivers and front-seat passengers to use seat belts. Since that time, thousands of lives a year have been saved by seat belts in New York including 467 in 2012 and 446 in 2013.

On Friday, May 15, representatives from the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee of New York will be hosting a press conference near the New York/Pennsylvania border to announce a new “Click it or Ticket - Border to Border” enforcement mobilization to enforce seat belt laws in the Southern Tier of New York, the Northern Tier of Pennsylvania, and across the state and nation.

WHEN:          Friday, May 15, 2015 - 11:00 a.m.

WHERE:       Broome Gateway Rest Area on Interstate 81N, just north of the New York-Pennsylvania border, which serves northbound traffic on Interstate 81 between the Pennsylvania state line and Exit 1 in Kirkwood, Broome County.

George Beach, Colonel, New York State Police

GREAT ON-SITE VISUALS:

  • The New York State Police crash simulator, known as “The Seat Belt Convincer.”

  • The New York State Police “Rollover Simulator,” which demonstrates the importance of using seat belts in the event of a rollover accident.  The rollover simulator is a compact pickup truck cab affixed to a two-axle low profile trailer featuring a single acceleration and braking control system to spin the cab, simulating a rollover crash.
