DMV OFFERS ONLINE REGISTRATION OF OUT-OF STATE SNOWMOBILES
Non-Residents Can Obtain Temporary Registration and Immediately Begin Riding

In an effort to make it easier for snowmobile riders from other states to operate their sleds in New York, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has developed a new online transaction that will allow out-of-state snowmobilers to print temporary New York State registrations for snowmobiles that are currently registered in their home states. The temporary certificate, combined with their home state registration document, will allow snowmobilers from out-of state to begin riding immediately in New York.

"This is another example of what the Department is doing to improve customer service by working better, smarter and more efficiently," said DMV Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala. "We hope that the convenience of this new online registration will encourage many non-residents to visit New York to enjoy our recreational areas and all the wonderful snowmobile trails that our state has to offer."

"I applaud the DMV for making it easier for out-of-state snowmobilers to visit New York State. With thousands of miles of trails, snowmobiling is an important part of the winter activities at New York State parks and a significant part of upstate's tourism economy," said NYS Parks Commissioner Rose Harvey. "This online registration system is one more example of how Governor Cuomo's administration is making New York Open for Business."

Anyone operating a snowmobile in New York must register the sled in the state and obtain a validation sticker for display. Previously, out-of-state snowmobilers were required to visit a DMV office or mail in their registration application prior to riding in New York. This was difficult to do on weekends when most DMV offices are closed, discouraging some out-of-state enthusiasts from snowmobiling in New York, especially for residents of neighboring states making last minute plans.

The new temporary certificate is valid for 15 days. At the time it is printed, a permanent registration is generated at the DMV and will be mailed to the recipient, along with their validation sticker. Payment for the permanent registration is made online at the time the temporary proof of registration is requested. There is no additional charge for the temporary certificate.

"Over the years we have consistently heard from out-of-state riders how difficult it was to obtain the required New York State registration especially if you were arriving on the weekend," said Gary J. Broderick, President of the New York State Snowmobile Association. "The Department's effort to implement a complete online transaction will put New York at the forefront in welcoming out-of-state snowmobilers to our great trail system. We would like to thank the New York State DMV for developing this system that will encourage visits to the Empire State and help stimulate our economy."

A New York State snowmobile registration costs $45 if a customer is a member of the New York State Snowmobile Association. Otherwise, the cost is $100. $10 of the registration fee goes to the State's general fund, with the remainder going to the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund which is administered by the Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. There are over 10,500 miles on the statewide snowmobile trails system traversing 47 counties, maintained by over 200 clubs.
