Before You Start

To check the status of your vehicle's title or lien, you will need the

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • vehicle  model year
  • vehicle make

How can I check the status of a vehicle title or lien online?

You can check the status of vehicle titles and liens online.


How long does it take to receive a title certificate in the mail?

When you register your vehicle or order a replacement title, it can take up to 90 days to receive the title certificate from the DMV in the mail.


Can I check the title or lien status of my boat online?

No. The service is not available for boat titles.


What status information is displayed?

The status check service displays 

  • the date the title was issued by DMV 1
  • the number of liens (if any)
  • the name and address of the lienholder(s)

The service does not display any personal information about the vehicle owner or registrant. 


How do I use the service?

You must provide the

  • Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)
  • vehicle model year
  • vehicle make (i.e. ‘Ford’, ‘Jeep’)

This information can be found on your vehicle's registration documents (see a sample).

  • 1. The issue date is the date the DMV prints the title certificate. The DMV mails the certificate after it's printed.
