Apply to Be a Body Damage Estimator
To become a licensed Body Damage Estimator by the Department of Motor Vehicles in New York State, you must
- have at least 1 year of training and/or experience in body repair cost estimating for a registered repair shop; or, have at least 1 year of training and/or experience in adjusting body repair claims for an insurance company or independent adjuster; or, have at least 6 months of experience in body repair cost estimating for a registered repair shop and a degree in automotive technology from an accredited college or university or vocational school.
- have a valid New York State DMV Identification Number (Client ID Number) from your New York State driver license, learner permit, or non-driver photo identification card. If you are not a New York State resident, you can get a New York State Client ID Number by completing a Request for Photo Image (PDF) (ID-5VSBDE) and having your photo taken at any New York State DMV office.
- complete the online application at https://www.nyvip3.com/ under the Inspectors menu option.

DMV takes 6 to 8 weeks to process an application.
Refunds
If your application is not approved, DMV will refund you the $150 certification fee.
