About

The Self-Certification Program allows select licensed driving schools to conduct qualifying tests for instructors the school wants to hire. In addition, these schools can be approved to teach the 30-Hour Basic Instructor’s Course (titled Methods and Content Course for In-Car Instruction or MCCII) to driving school instructors.

Criteria

To qualify for the Self Certification Program, your driving school must have:

  • been in business for at least five years, with no suspension or revocation of the driving school license
  • conducted the Pre-Licensing Course at least 10 times in each of the five years preceding the date of your application
  • at least one qualified instructor who has
    • a valid Driving School Instructor’s Certificate (MV-524) with your school
    • completed an advanced course in Teaching Techniques and Methodology
    • completed a 30-Hour Basic Instructor’s Course (MCCII)
    • at least five years of experience as a driving instructor

Apply using the Driving School Self-Certification Application (PDF) (DTP-160).

Application Review

Driver Training Programs will review your application and compare it against DMV's records to verify that your school meets the requirements. DMV may wish to conduct additional investigations, including an onsite inspection of your driving school and/or an audit of your school's records, before it grants eligibility.
