All exams are in English. Prior to appointment, candidates from a language proficiency eligible list must demonstrate proficiency in that language to ensure their ability to perform the duties of the position.

Plus $3,026 annual downstate adjustment when working in the five boroughs of NYC, or Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties.
As armed NY State Peace Officers, DMV Investigative Specialists conduct a variety of field investigations and basic law enforcement functions such as arrests, testimony, and prisoner transport. They conduct investigations of forged ownership and identity documents and suspected fraud or deceit by registrants, licensees, or applicants. Investigative Specialists use facial recognition technology to uncover multiple identities and identity theft schemes. They investigate those engaged in stealing vehicles, including organized auto theft rings; determine the true identity of vehicles and locating VINs to detect stolen vehicles and parts.
