Applying for a REAL ID-Compliant Document

You need a Social Security Card or Ineligibility letter to apply for a REAL ID compliant license or permit.

To apply for a New York State license or permit that is Real ID compliant, you must provide either

  • your Social Security Card, or
  • a letter from the Social Security Administration issued within the past 30 days stating that you are ineligible for a Social Security Number

Without this proof, we can not give you a Real ID license.
