The DMV uses NY.gov ID to allow access to MyDMV. NY.gov ID gives you access to many different New York State online services with a single username and password. You can use a new or existing NY.gov ID to access your MyDMV profile. For more information on the personalized services available through MyDMV, see MyDMV Account Help.
Create a NY.gov ID Account
Step 1: Go to My.NY.gov
Step 2: Click “Create an Account”. Select that you would like to create a personal account.
Step 3: To set up your NY.gov account, you will need to enter your:
- name
- email address
- address
You will also need to create a username. Your username can be a combination of
- letters (a,b,c)
- numbers (1,2,3)
- period ( . )
- at ( @ )
- dash ( - )
- underscore ( _ )
Step 4: Open the email with directions on how to finish setting up your account.
Step 5: Create a permanent password and security questions/answers (Shared Secrets).
Link Your MyDMV to Your NY.gov ID Account
Step 1: Sign into My.NY.gov
Step 2: On the NY.gov ID landing page, select the MyDMV button.
Step 3: Enter your personal information to sign up for MyDMV. You will need:
- the 9-digit DMV ID Number and 8-or 10-digit Document number from your most recently issued New York State driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID (see sample documents) - if you never had a New York State license, permit or non-driver ID, you cannot register for MyDMV.
- the last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (see what to do if you do not have a Social Security Number).
- your date of birth.
- the ZIP code currently on file with the DMV (if you moved can update your address information after you log in).
After verifying this information, you will be asked to set up Shared Secrets to securely access your account in the future. If you access MyDMV in the future using your NY.gov ID, you will not need to verify your personal information again.
