Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Announces More Than 131,000 Tickets Issued During Statewide Labor Day Enforcement Mobilization

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today announced the results of the Labor Day education and enforcement campaign that ran August 15 through September 1, 2025. During that time, state and local law enforcement increased patrols to target impairment, speeding and other reckless driving behaviors.

Law enforcement across New York State issued 131,245 tickets during the enforcement, including 4,125 arrests for impaired driving and 24,905 citations for speeding.
"The results are clear; until we have zero arrests or tickets issued over an enforcement period, there is an obvious need for the enforcement period,” Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner and Governor's Traffic Safety Committee Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder said. “I want to thank our law enforcement partners for their continued commitment to helping keep our communities safe."

During the campaign, State and local law enforcement officers utilized sobriety checkpoints and increased patrols to deter, identify and arrest impaired drivers. The statewide initiative was funded by STOP-DWI and the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC).

New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said, “We know all too well that tragedies caused by impaired, reckless, and distracted driving are preventable. The results of this crackdown show that people continue to get behind the wheel while drunk and impaired by drugs.  We will continue the mission alongside the Department of Motor Vehicles and law enforcement partners to remove reckless drivers from our roadways.”

James Quattrone, Chautauqua County Sheriff and President of the NYS Sheriffs’ Association said, “Hopefully the Labor Day weekend was enjoyable for everyone.  Whether it was trips to beaches and camps, county fairs, or school shopping, most people were on the road driving in a courteous and safe manner. Unfortunately, there were people who drove aggressively or impaired.  Some caused crashes and others were stopped by law enforcement before they could hurt themselves or others. The Sheriffs of New York State want you to enjoy the end of summer and the beginning of fall while obeying the speed limits and not driving impaired.”

Chief Paul Oliva, Mount Pleasant Police Department and New York State Assn. of Chiefs of Police President said, “As summer winds down and fall is upon us, we hope everyone enjoyed the Labor Day holiday weekend. While the majority of the drivers continue to drive safely on the roads across the state, there are those who still continue to make poor choices and drive recklessly or impaired, resulting in many being ticketed or arrested during the most recent enforcement initiative. Local law enforcement agencies will continue to monitor our highways to identify aggressive and impaired driving, and enforce the laws of New York State, in order to make our streets safer for everyone.”

The Labor Day impaired driving enforcement campaign is one of the several coordinated initiatives sponsored by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) to reduce alcohol and other drug-related traffic crashes. These targeted mobilizations provide resources to law enforcement statewide to target underage drinking and increase DWI patrols and sobriety check points during the campaign period. Other impaired driving campaigns occur around St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and periods of time from August to September and December to January.
