Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee Announces More Than 46,000 Tickets Issued During Statewide Speed Awareness Enforcement Mobilization

The Governor's Traffic Safety Committee (GTSC) today announced the results of the “Speed Awareness Week” education and enforcement campaign that ran August 4 – 10, 2025. During that time, state and local law enforcement increased patrols to target speeding and other reckless driving behaviors.

Law enforcement across New York State issued more than 46,000 tickets during the enforcement, including 14,202 for speeding and 893 arrests for impaired driving. The campaign was a collaboration of law enforcement agencies throughout New York State to stop speeding and prevent avoidable crashes caused by unsafe speed.

"Speeding is a choice for drivers and the decision to push the limit has countless risks and could lead to deadly consequences,” Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Governor's Traffic Safety Committee Chair Mark J.F. Schroeder said. “The results of this campaign serve as a reminder to all drivers to maintain safe speeds on our roadways. Plan extra time into your travel schedule so you don’t feel the need to rush. Slowing down helps keep all New Yorkers safe."

New York State Police Superintendent Steven G. James said, “Whether it’s distracted or aggressive driving or speeding, it’s careless driving behavior that needlessly claims lives and causes serious injuries every year. Everyone can keep our roads safe by simply slowing down and obeying the posted speed limit.  I thank our partners at the Department of Motor Vehicles and commend our State Troopers and members of all law enforcement agencies for the work they do continuously to improve safety on our roadways.”

James Quattrone, Chautauqua County Sheriff and President of the NYS Sheriffs’ Association said, “Obeying the speed limit is an easy decision that can help drivers avoid a crash. Unfortunately, the results of this campaign show that many people made the wrong decision and chose to use excessive speed on the roadways, placing themselves and others in danger. Campaigns like this are crucial in reminding drivers that they have a responsibility to everyone on the roadways to drive safely.”

Chief Paul Oliva, Mount Pleasant Police Department and New York State Assn. of Chiefs of Police President said, “We hope everyone continues to enjoy the summer weather. The majority of the drivers are driving safely on the roads across the state. However, some people continue to make poor choices and drive recklessly, resulting in many being ticketed or arrested during the most recent speed enforcement initiative. Local law enforcement agencies will continue to monitor our highways to identify impaired and aggressive driving and engage those who do so, in order to reduce harm in our communities.”
