NYS DMV Acting Commissioner Christian Jackstadt Meets with UK Under-Secretary for Transport
Leaders Discussed Best Practices in Driver Licensing and Road Safety
Christian Jackstadt, Acting Commissioner of the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles, met Tuesday with the United Kingdom’s Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Transport.
Jackstadt and Under-Secretary Lilian Greenwood talked in New York City, where she attended the United Nations High-Level Meeting on Road Safety July 20-21.
The minister requested the meeting to deepen her understanding of international best practices in driver licensing and road safety measures, particularly those relating to vision standards and graduated driver licensing (GDL) systems such as the one New York uses.
“We regularly talk to our counterparts in other states to talk about best practices in both licensing and road safety, so I was very excited to compare our experiences with Under-Secretary Greenwood,” Acting Commissioner Jackstadt said. “While we may be divided by an ocean, we have much in common in our focus on keeping pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, drivers and all other road users safe.”
Like New York State, the United Kingdom’s is committed to improving road safety outcomes, as set out in its latest road safety strategy.
The minister also visited a DMV facility in Manhattan with a view to observing driver eyesight testing procedures and engaging with officials to discuss the approach taken by New York on
- Driver vision assessment and licensing renewal requirements; and
- Graduated driver licensing frameworks, including measures to support novice drivers.
