NYS DMV Honored for Communications Initiatives, Commitment to Organ Donation

Employees at the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles earned honors for both their communications efforts and for one office’s profound commitment to getting people to join the state’s Organ Donor Registry.

“We are so very proud of the work our employees do every day, and it is very gratifying when those efforts are recognized by others,” said Acting DMV Commissioner Christian Jackstadt. “We value communicating clearly with the public and consistently work to improve how we do it, and we are committed to continue to spread the word about the urgent need for registered organ donors.”

The Communications staff won two awards from the American Association of Motor Vehicles Administrators (AAMVA) at its recent Region 1 conference, bringing together motor vehicles professionals from the Northeast and Canada.

AAMVA presented a persuasive writing award for a press release about the New York Mobile ID timed for St. Patrick’s Day and headlined “Get Mobile ID Before You Go Out for a Guinness.”

A second award was granted for a video in a series that focused on top 10 traffic safety tips. The honored video focused on roundabouts. DMV worked with Lt. Jeffrey Margan of the Saratoga County Sheriff’s Office to offer drivers advice on how to navigate through a roundabout.
The Springfield Gardens office earned the Donate Life America DMV Innovation Award from AAMVA for its work to promote joining the organ donor registry. 

The person nominating the office, Amanda Vesey-Askey, Hospital and Community Liaison Supervisor at The Eye-Bank for Sight Restoration, wrote: “The thing that most stands out to me about what I've observed in the way that the Springfield Gardens DMV staff talks about their conversations with customers about enrolling in the NYS Donate Life Registry to give the gifts of life, sight, and health is their unabashed positivity and the level of confidence and comfort they have developed in talking about the subject. … The joy and community spirit of Springfield Gardens staff is infectious and has been having a positive effect on their customer base feeling comfortable when encountering the question of enrolling in the Donate Life Registry.”
