NEW YORK STATE FAIR VISITORS CAN APPLY FOR A REAL ID

REAL ID-Complaint Identification Will Be Required to Fly Within U.S. Starting October 1, 2020

New BrochureVideo Provide Guidance to Customers

Visitors to the New York State Fair can apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License, as well as perform a host of other tasks at a mobile New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) office. The mobile office will be located on the Fairgrounds in the Center of Progress Building from Wednesday, August 21, through Labor Day, September 2.

“The New York State Fair is a great event that attracts people from across the state and around the nation,” said DMV Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder. “We are proud to be there and to offer our customers a convenient opportunity to handle their DMV business while they are there.”

To help New Yorkers prepare for getting a REAL ID, DMV is urging customers to follow three simple steps before coming to a DMV Office—use the online document guide, bring appropriate proof of residency and bring proof of your full, legal name. These tips are available through a new brochure. Following these guidelines will help customers avoid multiple trips to the DMV when applying for a REAL ID or Enhanced document.

According to the federal REAL ID Act, everyone flying in the U.S. beginning October 1, 2020 will need a REAL ID or another form of federally-accepted identification such as a U.S. Passport or Enhanced Driver License. Travelers who do not have one of these documents will not be able to board a plane.

The federal REAL ID Act requires customers to visit a DMV office to apply for a REAL ID, or to apply for an Enhanced Driver License (EDL) if they do not already have one.  For customer convenience, the DMV will again have a mobile office at the New York State Fair where customers can apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License. The mobile office will be located on the Fairgrounds in the Center of Progress Building from Wednesday, August 21through Labor Day, September 2.

Customers applying for a REAL ID or Enhanced document should follow these helpful tips:

  1. Use the Online Document Guide

The DMV’s online document guide is the easiest way to make sure you are prepared for your visit to the DMV. The document guide shows you exactly what documents you need to apply for a REAL ID or Enhanced document. It creates an individualized checklist of all the documents you need to bring to the DMV such as a utility bill, Social Security card, and more. Expired documents will not be accepted. Certified copies of both birth and marriage certificates are accepted.

  2. Bring Appropriate Proof of Residency

If you are applying for a REAL ID or Enhanced document, you must provide two proofs of New York State residency. A New York State License, Permit or Non-Driver ID Card, a recent bank statement, or a recent pay stub showing your current New York State address are just some of the acceptable proofs of residency. DMV will accept certain electronic documents such as a utility bill, credit card statement or pay stub if they are printed. Documents with a P.O. Box listed cannot be accepted.
Additionally, any documents issued more than one year before your office visit will not be accepted. For example, a bank statement or utility bill that is provided as proof of residency must have been issued within the last 365 days of the customer’s visit to DMV.

  3. Bring Proof of Your Full, Legal Name

DMV may only print your legal name on a REAL ID or Enhanced document.  A nickname, like an abbreviated or alternate version of your legal name, is not allowed.  If a nickname, abbreviated name or confirmation name appears on any of your proof documents, additional proof of full, legal name, or proof of a court-ordered name change, must be shown.
If your name has changed once or multiple times due to marriage or divorce, for example, proof of each change, such as a marriage certificate or divorce decree, must be provided to show the connection.

The DMV first offered the REAL ID in 2017. The cost to get one is the same as getting a standard New York State license or non-driver ID, which is now marked Not for Federal Purposes.

The Enhanced Driver License (EDL), which has been available to New Yorkers since 2008, also is acceptable for federal REAL ID purposes. An EDL costs an additional $30 and can be used as identification at land and sea borders when returning to the United States from Canada, Mexico and some countries in the Caribbean.

Currently, REAL ID-compliant identification is required to enter certain federal buildings and military bases.
