NEW YORK STATE DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL SERVICE AND DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES ANNOUNCE ONLINE EXAM NOW OPEN FOR MOTOR VEHICLE REPRESENTATIVES   

Approximately 500 Motor Vehicle Representative Positions Anticipated Statewide Over Next Year  

Applicants Can Begin Taking the Online Exam Now Through August 31, 2022  

The New York State Department of Civil Service (DCS) and the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that the online civil service exam period is now open for Motor Vehicle Representatives. The exam, which is being offered as an online exam for the first time, is used to fill positions across the DMV. Qualified candidates can take the exam online until 11:59 EST on Wednesday, August 31, 2022.  

Department of Civil Service Commissioner Timothy R. New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Mark J.F. Schroeder said, “This new online option will greatly benefit not only those applying to take the Motor Vehicle Representative exam, but our customers as well. It will facilitate DMV’s efforts to attract qualified candidates and allow us to better serve the motoring public, especially our non-English speaking customers. And those seeking to enter public service will have a more-convenient path to a rewarding career in New York State government.” 

People interested in being considered for a Motor Vehicle Representative position within state government must first meet the minimum qualifications for the title, which requires a high school diploma or a high school equivalency diploma AND one year of customer service experience or 30 semester credit hours of college level courses. All people who meet the minimum qualifications must apply for the exam, then access the online exam and submit all examination materials by August 31, 2022. The online exam will require candidates to provide information about their training and experience with an online questionnaire that is completed and submitted by the candidate. Candidates should be prepared to provide information about their education and customer service-based employment history to be able to respond to the questions on the questionnaire accurately. 

The exam will also be used to hire Motor Vehicle Representatives with proficiency in other languages to help provide service to all DMV customers including Chinese, Creole, Italian, Korean, Manual Communications (Sign Language), Russian and Spanish. While the online exam is in English, those with proficiency in another language will be required to pass a language proficiency exam at the time of hire.

Motor Vehicle Representatives provide quality customer service, issue secure documents, and verify identities. Employees in this title have substantial contact with members of the public seeking services or information. Most positions are in various DMV field offices. Smaller numbers are assigned to DMV telephone call centers, plate facilities, and specialized main-office bureaus. The starting salary for Motor Vehicle Representative is $37,507, plus an additional $3,026 when working in the five boroughs of New York City, or Nassau, Suffolk, Rockland, or Westchester counties. The position also includes generous benefits including paid leave, health benefits, and retirement plans and telecommuting options may be available to employees in this title who meet certain criteria.  

It is estimated that more than 500 Motor Vehicle Representative positions statewide will be filled over the next year.
