DMV SHOWS APPRECIATION OF NEW YORK’S VETERANS WITH CUSTOM PLATES
AND SPECIALLY DESIGNATED LICENSES
Standard veteran plates and “veteran” designation on licenses available

In recognition of Veterans Day, the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today reminded New Yorkers that custom license plates are available for veterans of all branches of the U.S. armed services and reserves, as well as plates featuring medals and awards, military and veteran communities, and wars and battles. New York State has a proud history of its citizens answering the call of service, and today, there are nearly 900,000 veterans who call New York home.

“Veterans Day is an important opportunity for us to show appreciation and honor the sacrifices made by the men and women of our armed forces,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan.  “We are very proud to offer a variety of custom veteran license plates, veteran status designation on DMV-issued photo documents, and commercial driver license (CDL) road test waivers for qualified military applicants.”

DMV’s specialty plates honoring veterans are available for passenger and commercial vehicles, and some are also available as motorcycle plates.  Some of the most popular plates in this series include:

  • United States Veteran
  • Purple Heart Recipient
  • Veterans of Foreign Wars
  • Vietnam Veteran
  • War on Terror Veteran

Since 2013, DMV has offered a special veteran status designation on the driver licenses and non-driver ID cards of honorably discharged veterans. More than 42,000 veteran indicators have been printed on documents to date. Many businesses provide discounts to veterans, and the designation makes it simpler and more convenient for veterans to show and verify to a business their status as veterans without having to carry multiple forms of identification.

In order to obtain this status from DMV, applicants must mark the appropriate box on the application form (MV-44 or MV-2) and show their original Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214), which states either Honorable or Under Honorable Conditions in the Character of Service section. Eligible veterans who request the status will have the word “veteran” printed on the upper left corner of their newly issued driver license, permit, or non-driver ID. Applicants may apply through the mail at renewal time (a photocopy of the DD-214 form is acceptable) or by visiting their local DMV office for a renewal or replacement document. The licenses cannot be ordered by phone or online.  More information can be found here.

DMV also offers veterans the benefit of a CDL road test waiver for qualified military applicants.  If a veteran has military experience driving commercial motor vehicles, they can apply for a waiver of the CDL skills road test when applying for a CDL.  Since the program began in February 2012, DMV has waived 900 CDL road tests.  Waivers are granted to the fullest extent possible under federal law.  More information on this program is available here.
