DMV ENCOURAGES OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS TO PURCHASE “I LOVE NY” ADVENTURE PLATES AS ANGLERS CELEBRATE START OF TROUT AND SALMON FISHING SEASON

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today reminded outdoor enthusiasts as trout and salmon fishing season begins that they can purchase New York State outdoor adventure license plates, three of which feature “I Love NY Fishing” designs. The passenger, commercial, and motorcycle class plates are available to anyone holding a valid sporting license issued by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) or an Empire Passport issued by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (Parks). Other adventure plates feature hunting and parks motifs to promote tourism and outdoor opportunities that New York State offers.

“It is a particularly great time of year for anglers, who can finally get back on the water and spend time doing what they love,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “Our exclusive adventure plates were designed with anglers and others who love the great outdoors in mind, and we encourage those eligible to order the plates and show their pride in New York.”

Governor Cuomo introduced the passenger and commercial plates in 2014 and the motorcycle plates in 2015 to boost tourism and promote outdoor opportunities statewide. The plate fee varies depending on whether DMV assigns the plate number or if a customer personalizes the plate. For passenger and commercial classes, if the number is assigned, the initial plate fee is $43.75; if it is personalized, the plate fee is $75. At the time of renewal, there is an annual renewal fee of $15 and $46.25, respectively. For motorcycles, if the number is assigned, the initial plate fee is $31.25; if it is personalized, the fee is $50.00. At the time of renewal, there is an annual renewal fee of $15 and $33.75, respectively. A portion of the annual fee benefits New York State tourism.

There are some annual fee discounts for those who purchased their DEC lifetime license within certain time frames. To order yours, contact DMV’s Custom Plate Unit Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. at (518) 402-4838.

Also in 2014, the Governor announced that New Yorkers with lifetime recreation or sporting licenses can make their New York State driver licenses all-purpose boating, fishing, hunting, and parks ID cards. Customers can transform their DMV-issued photo document (driver license, learner permit, or non-driver identification card) into an all-purpose sporting and recreation license that identifies the privileges or certifications purchased from DEC or Parks. Icons may be added to a DMV photo document to show the following lifetime licenses/privileges/certifications: Sportsman, Boating Safety, Small/Big Game, Fishing, Bow Hunting, Muzzle Loading, Trapping, and the Empire Passport. Only lifetime purchased licenses, privileges or certifications may be added to DMV-issued photo documents – annual licenses cannot be added. More information can be found here.

DEC Acting Commissioner Basil Seggos said, “DEC issues more than one million fishing and sporting licenses each year to outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy New York’s vast natural resources.  As anglers head out to take part in another trout and salmon season, we encourage them to purchase adventure plates and show their love of New York.”

“What better way to show your passion for fishing and the great outdoors than through the New York State Outdoor Adventure License Plates,” said Rose Harvey, Commissioner of the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. “New York State Parks have an abundance of locations where families and friends can experience all that fishing has to offer and build memories that will last a lifetime. I encourage visitors to explore the state parks nearest them to see what fishing and other outdoor opportunities may be available.”
