DMV RECEIVES THREE NATIONAL AWARDS FOR PUBLIC AFFAIRS AND CONSUMER EDUCATION
Video, Brochure, and Newsletter Recognized by American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that it has received three Public Affairs and Consumer Education (PACE) awards from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators (AAMVA). The agency received recognition for an electronic brochure created to educate bar owners and staff about the new security features on DMV-issued driver licenses, permits and ID; a video, “Do You Have What It Takes?,” which tells customers which documents to bring to DMV offices to complete transactions quickly and efficiently; and for its quarterly intra-agency newsletter, “On the Road Again,” which informs employees of agency accomplishments.

“It is very gratifying to be recognized nationally for our efforts to effectively serve the public,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan. “These awards are a testament to our commitment to provide exceptional motor vehicle services to our customers. The fact that this was a very competitive year for the PACE Awards makes these accolades even more significant.”

The brochure, “Security Features of New York State Driver Licenses, Permits, and ID Cards,” won in the category of “PACE Division 1: Print and Electronic Publications, Category 1C: Other Print or Electronic Publications.”  It was distributed to thousands of bars statewide with the ultimate goal of deterring underage drinking and preventing identity theft. Using a straight-forward design and minimal text, the brochure enables owners and staff to quickly identify the security features on the ID and confirm that it is a New York State-issued document. The security features of the newer DMV-issued licenses, permits and IDs are among the most advanced in the country, making them virtually impossible to alter or counterfeit.

“Do You Have What It Takes?,” which won the “PACE Category 5B – Video Production, Externally-Produced” award, is an animated and colorful short video designed to clearly, and in a lighthearted way, define for motorists what they need to bring with them to complete certain transactions. It is available as a YouTube video, and through a link from the DMV website.

The video was produced to help ensure customers come prepared with proper documents to complete their transactions, preventing multiple visits and saving all DMV office visitors time and effort.

“On the Road Again,” which won the “PACE Category 1A – Print or Electronic Newsletter, Internal or External” award, is a quarterly electronic newsletter made available via the department intranet to about 2,000 DMV employees statewide. It typically features stories concerning the statewide goings-on of DMV; employee retirements, awards, and customer recognition (kudos); and personal interest stories about employees who have done something special in their communities.

“This year, we received a record number of submissions… our judges were very impressed with the high caliber of all the submissions and the quality and breadth of your programs,” AAMVA President & CEO Anne Ferro wrote in a letter to New York DMV.  “Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!”

The PACE Awards recognize the public relations, public affairs and consumer education efforts of motor vehicle, law enforcement and traffic safety agencies across the United States and Canada. Nominees are judged on creativity, cost effectiveness and the ability to reach consumers with a well-crafted, measured and executed message in print and electronic, video, writing, and several other categories.

Founded in 1933, AAMVA represents the state and provincial officials in the United States and Canada who administer and enforce motor vehicle laws. AAMVA encourages uniformity and reciprocity among the states and provinces and serves as a liaison with other levels of government and the private sector.
