NEW YORK STATE DMV SEES RECORD NUMBER OF ONLINE TRANSACTIONS

More than 7 million transactions processed online in 2017

Consumers can use the DMV website to renew and replace vehicle registrations, obtain driving records, pay traffic tickets or schedule court hearings

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) set a new record for the number of online transactions in 2017, with more than 7.4 million transactions over the course of the year.

DMV has seen a steady increase in customers conducting their business with the department online. Last year saw a 2 percent rise in online transactions over 2016. The numbers had climbed from 6 million in 2015 to 7.3 million in 2016, a 20.5 percent increase, with voter registration for the presidential election driving the large year-over-year increase. DMV continued to maintain and grow those numbers in 2017.

Consumers can use the DMV website to renew and replace vehicle registrations, obtain driving records, pay traffic tickets or schedule court hearings.

Last year, consumers conducted more than $550 million worth of transactions online, up from $492 million the year before. That’s a 13 percent rise in revenue over 2016.

“We know more and more people are looking to conduct their business online, and DMV takes pride in giving our consumers greater flexibility to get the assistance they need,” said Terri Egan, DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner. “By enabling people to get their business done online, we lessen the need for people to come to a DMV office.”

In 2012, Governor Cuomo launched the DMV Customer Service Initiative to increase efficiency, streamline services, and improve customer service. As part of this direction, DMV made improvements to its offices, website, and call centers. The average wait time in DMV offices, which was 72 minutes in 2013, is now 30 minutes.

The most popular transaction on the DMV website is registration renewal. In 2017, there were more than 2.6 million registration renewal transactions online, up from 2.4 million the year before.

Motorists also made frequent use of the ePlead system. A total of 764,482 people used the system to schedule traffic hearings, up from 570,646 in 2016. The number of people paying traffic tickets online grew from 316,580 to 360,430.

DMV’s website also enables people to register to vote or to sign up to become organ donors. Consumers also can go to the DMV website to make a reservation before heading to some DMV offices in order to reduce their wait time.

“We are always looking for ways to improve and extend the services our customers can perform online, and motorists can look forward to continued improvements in the months and years ahead,” Egan said.
