To bring a vehicle from another state to register in New York

If you purchase a vehicle in another state, you will need to go through that state's DMV office to get a temporary plate and registration to transport the vehicle to New York.  Once the vehicle is in New York, you will need to follow the steps to register and title a vehicle here.

Moving out of New York State

What do I need to do with my plates if I move out of New York?

If you want to register your vehicle in another state, you must surrender your vehicle registration and plates to the New York DMV. 

Is out-of-state insurance acceptable for a vehicle registered in New York

No. If your vehicle is registered in New York State, you must have New York insurance coverage.  We will never accept out-of-state insurance coverage of any type for a vehicle registered in New York.

Vision requirements & restrictions

You must pass a vision test when you apply for a driver license or to renew your license. The test must show that you have visual acuity of at least 20/40 (based on the Snellen Visual Acuity Scale) in either or both eyes, with or without corrective lenses. 

You may take a vision test at a DMV office or your vision test results may be submitted to DMV
