DMV ANNOUNCES EXTENDED HOURS AT THREE OFFICES
Massapequa, Yonkers, Herald Square Offices to Stay Open Later on Weekdays

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles has announced that, as a convenience to motorists, three offices in the metropolitan New York area are now open for extended hours on weekdays. The new hours were announced by DMV Commissioner Barbara Fiala during a celebration event at the DMV's Massapequa office, one of three offices that are staying open later. The change is part of a sweeping customer service initiative called "Transforming DMV".

The other offices with extended hours are Yonkers and Herald Square. The new hours are in effect Monday through Thursday. The Massapequa and Herald Square offices are now open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m., while the Yonkers office is open from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. The Friday office hours, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., remain unchanged at all three locations.

"Transforming DMV, which involves premiere customer service, helpful call centers, convenient hours, online services and mobile technology, will be the model for how all state agencies will serve the public," said Commissioner Fiala. "It's a New, New York DMV and it only gets better."

One of the major goals of Transforming DMV is to reduce wait times in DMV offices by 50 percent. To do that, the Department will invest in technology to upgrade its customer service delivery systems.

Some of the technology improvements will include:

  • A self-serve queuing system that allows customers to reserve a place in line at a DMV office from a home computer or smart phone;
  • Self-service kiosks in DMV offices;
  • A modernized, intuitive Web site with apps for smart-phones;
  • A call center technology update, including installing a Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) telephone system which uses virtual queuing technology; and
  • A streamlined transaction process.

Some of these changes have already been implemented, while others are scheduled to be in place in the coming months.

For example, customers who visit a DMV office are now welcomed by Mobile Customer Services Representatives, who help them conduct business in the most efficient manner. Eventually, these customer representatives will use a tablet to help customers complete certain transactions on the spot.

Self-service kiosks have been installed in select DMV offices. Currently, customers can use the kiosks to renew their vehicle, boat or trailer registrations quickly and easily without waiting in line. DMV plans to expand the number of transactions that can be conducted on the kiosks, as well as roll them out in additional offices.
