NEW YORK DMV ANNOUNCES E-ZPASS TAGS TO BE SOLD AT STATE-OPERATED OFFICES
27 State Offices to Sell MTA and Thruway Tags Beginning Wednesday, April 19

The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) today announced that New York State Thruway and Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) E-ZPass tags will be sold in all 27 state-operated DMV offices beginning Wednesday, April 19.  As plans continue for an expansion of cashless tolling on all MTA tunnels and bridges by the end of 2017, as well as Thruway toll plazas, DMV offices represent another venue for New Yorkers, particularly downstate, to obtain E-ZPass tags.  State-run DMV offices, which conduct more than four million transactions annually, are located in New York City, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Albany and Onondaga counties. See a listing of DMV offices.

“The ability to purchase an E-ZPass tag in a state-operated DMV office will enable thousands of New Yorkers to join the cashless tolling movement that’s expanding across New York,” said DMV Executive Deputy Commissioner Terri Egan.  “At DMV, we are in the business of customer service and I believe no state does it better than New York.  If you need to come to a DMV office to complete a transaction and are also in need of an E-ZPass tag, I encourage you to make the most out of your visit and purchase one.  Enjoy the benefits of cashless tolling!”

State-operated DMV offices will sell New York State Thruway E-ZPass tags for $25 and MTA tags for $30.  Tags must be registered before the first use either online at e-zpassny.comhttps://new.mta.info/ or by calling 1-800-697-1554. Generally, tags are available for use the next day.  Once registered, the full value of the purchase price is applied to the E-ZPass account.  Customers can use E-ZPass tags in 16 States and receive up to 50 percent in toll discounts on travel in New York State.

“Partnering with the DMV will further assist our efforts in making E-ZPass tags as widely accessible as possible, while also providing us with another platform to message the many benefits of opening an E-ZPass account,” said Timothy Mulligan, Acting President, MTA Bridges and Tunnels. “As we transition to cashless tolling, we believe E-ZPass provides our customers with the most convenient and cost-effective way of experiencing our facilities.”

“Offering E-ZPass at state-operated New York State DMV locations will make it even easier to enjoy toll discounts and non-stop travel on the Thruway,” said Thruway Authority Acting Executive Director Bill Finch. “With support from Governor Cuomo and other agencies, our state is continuously improving the driving experience on the Thruway, and expanding E-ZPass plays an important role in that initiative.”

Cashless tolling is projected to save commuters up to 21 hours of drive time every year.  Additionally, it reduces emissions and significantly decreases the amount of fuel burned by drivers, who will no longer have to stop and start waiting to pay tolls.  This will conserve approximately one million gallons of fuel and save $2.3 million each year.  To ensure that all users of toll facilities in New York State pay their fair share, a series of enforcement measures are in place to tackle toll payment evasion and chronic toll scofflaws.
