The annual custom plate renewal fee is in addition to your vehicle registration renewal fee. You will be billed for the plates every two years when you renew your registration. 

Requirements

• An original letter from the DMV-approved news organization on the company letterhead which requests that New York Press (NYP) plates be issued to the applicant. 
  • The letter must be signed by a person approved by the DMV to sign an NYP plate request letter. The letter must include the name or pseudonym of the applicant, a daytime phone number for the applicant, the job title including a complete description of duties of the applicant, and a statement that the applicant is employed full-time in a news-gathering position and that the use of a personally-owned vehicle is required to cover breaking news, to take photographs or to shoot film.
• If the vehicle is registered to the company, a letter is required that states that the vehicle is used for newsgathering purposes.
• A copy of the registration for the vehicle that will receive the NYP plates. The vehicle must be registered in the name of the person who applies for NYP plates or in the name of the newsgathering company.
• An applicant who works in New York City must provide a copy of their NYC Police Department working press identification card.
• A fee of $60.00 paid with a check, money order, or credit card. The fee may vary depending upon the expiration date of your current registration. A check or money order can be made payable to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
