DMV OFFERS SATURDAY AND EXTENDED WEEKDAY HOURS AT SELECT OFFICES
Goal is to provide improved customer service

New York State Department of Motor Vehicles Commissioner Barbara J. Fiala announced today that in an effort to better serve their customers, the DMV has started a pilot program to test the effectiveness of offering Saturday hours at its offices in Syracuse, Medford and Herald Square. The DMV is also piloting extended weekday hours at Herald Square, Massapequa and Yonkers. The pilot is part of the DMV "Customer Service Initiative" which was created in response to Governor Cuomo's call for all State agencies to begin "reimagining government" so that they are more responsive to the state's citizens.

The DMV offices in Syracuse (Western Lights Plaza), Medford and Herald Square will be open on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to noon through November 23. DMV offices in Massapequa, Yonkers and Herald Square will be open weekdays from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. through the end of March 2014. Typically DMV offices are not open on Saturday and close on weekdays at 4:00 p.m.

"We are very pleased to offer these additional hours to our customers," said Commissioner Fiala. "This pilot program will provide us with additional information that will help us further develop and redesign our services to better meet the needs of the citizens of New York State."

In addition to the extended hours, DMV is also implementing other changes such as an in-office self-serve queuing system that will also allow customers to make an appointment from a home PC or smart phone; self-serve kiosks in state operated DMV offices where customers can conduct several transactions such as registration and license renewals; new technology to expand call center response times; and a redesign of the DMV website to offer more web and mobile transactions. Two goals of the customer service initiative are to reduce office wait times to 30 minutes or less and increase the number of transactions done online or through other means that don't require visiting an office.
