NYS DMV REPORTS RECORD NUMBER OF ONLINE TRANSACTIONS BY CUSTOMERS
More than 7.6 million transactions processed in 2018; almost 2 million additional consumers used DMV document guide

Customers advised to consider online transactions during busy vacation period from April 15-26
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) announced today that the agency set a new record for the number of online transactions in 2018, with 7.6 million consumers choosing to handle their business through the DMV’s website [3].
DMV has seen tremendous growth in online transactions. In 2015, DMV processed 6 million transactions online.
“Being able to handle their business online is a great benefit for consumers,” said Mark J.F. Schroeder, Acting DMV Commissioner. “By completing transactions from their home or on their phone, customers not only enjoy great convenience for themselves; they also reduce wait times for those who do need to come into an office.”
In addition, DMV saw exceptional growth in the use of its online document guide that helps customers know what proof to bring when getting a license, permit or non-driver ID. The guide was launched in November 2017 and saw some 165,000 people use it the first two months. In its first full year, the document guide was accessed almost 2 million times. Many customers have used it to find the proof they need to get a REAL ID or Enhanced Driver License, which they will need to fly within the United States after October 1, 2020.
Customers can use the DMV website to renew and replace licenses and vehicle registrations, obtain driving records, pay NYC traffic tickets, make a reservation at state-run DMV offices, and schedule DMV moving violation hearings. DMV also enables people to submit voter registration information and to sign up as an organ donor.
DMV encourages using online transactions and avoiding a trip to an office during the spring break weeks from April 15-26, which are typically some of our busiest times.
Mondays and Fridays are the busiest days at DMV offices, as well as holiday weeks and the day after a holiday.
Last year, consumers conducted more than $592 million in transactions online through the DMV. That number rose from more than $550 million in 2017 and $492 million in 2016.
In 2012, Governor Andrew M. Cuomo launched the DMV Customer Service Initiative to increase efficiency, streamline services, and improve customer service. As part of this direction, DMV made improvements to its offices, website, and call centers. The average wait time in state-operated DMV offices, which was 72 minutes in 2013, is now 30 minutes.
Registration renewals remain the most popular online transaction. In 2018, there were more than 2.8 million registration renewal transactions online, up from 2.6 million the year before.
Motorists also made frequent use of the system to plead to or pay NYC traffic tickets. A total of 873,271 people used the system to schedule traffic hearings, up from 764,482 in 2017. The number of people paying traffic tickets online grew from 360,430 to 386,731.
