When you sign up for MyDMV, you will be able to create an NY.gov username and password.

I forgot my username or password [9]
You might already have a MyDMV account, but forgotten your sign-in information, or forgotten that an account exists. If you try to sign up, MyDMV will recognize that your ID number is already associated with a MyDMV account, and tell you what your username is. It is important that you copy the username exactly from the message displayed when you try to log in. You can then use NY.gov self-service to recover your password if you've forgotten it.

NY.gov accounts can be used to sign into multiple NYS agencies. You may have multiple NY.gov accounts, but only one NY.gov username can be associated with your MyDMV account. If you try to sign into MyDMV with the NY.gov account that you use for Taxes (for example), and it is not already associated with MyDMV, you will be redirected to the MyDMV sign up page, with your NY.gov username pre-filled.
Then, if you already have a different NY.gov username associated with your MyDMV account, when you submit the sign-up form you will be given the correct NY.gov username for MyDMV. It is important that you copy the username exactly from the message displayed when you try to log in. You can then use NY.gov self-service to recover your password if you've forgotten it.
