Guidance

Update Your Address Within 10 Days of Moving or if There is an Error

  • If you move, you must change your address on your license, permit, non-driver ID, and vehicle records with the DMV within 10 days.
  • If you discover an error on your address, you should correct it.
  • When you change your address for vehicle registration, we also update the title certificate record.
    • If the name on your registration record does not exactly match what is on your title certificate you will need to contact the Title Services Bureau at 1-518-486-4714 to update the address on your title record.
  • While it is recommended, you do not need to order new DMV documents with your new address. You can write your new address on the back of your driver license, non-driver ID card, or learner permit, and on the front of the registration document (carefully draw lines through the old address). Do not write the new address on a title certificate.
  • The DMV sends documents and important notices to customers by mail. We recommend that you use the same address on all of your applications, documents, and transactions.

The U.S. Postal Service Does Not Notify DMV When You Change Your Mailing Address

Changing your address with the U.S. Postal Service does not update your DMV records. You must still report your address change to both the U.S. Postal Service and the DMV.

Traffic Violations Bureau Tickets

If you update your address for a Traffic Violations Bureau (TVB) traffic ticket transaction, the update does not change the address on your driver license, non-driver ID, permit, or vehicle registration records.

If you update the address for your driver license, non-driver ID, permit, or vehicle registration records, the update does not change the address for your traffic ticket.

Residential or Mailing Address

Mailing addresses do not appear on new photo ID documents. All new photo ID documents will only show your residential address.

DMV mail will still be sent to your mailing address if it differs from your residential address.

How to Update Your Address

Online

There are two options for changing your address online.

Signing into or Creating an NY.gov ID

You can sign in to your existing NY.gov ID to change your address. If you don't already have an NY.gov ID, you can create one using

  • Your Client ID Number (see sample documents)
  • The Document Number from your most recent photo document (see sample documents)
  • Your date of birth
  • The state and zip code from your DMV address on file
  • The last 4 digits of your Social Security Number (SSN)

During the enrollment process, you will be asked to set up two-factor authentication and shared secrets, which will let you access your profile more easily on future visits.

You will also be asked to set up two-factor authentication and shared secrets for an existing account, if you have not already done so.

Go to NY.gov To Sign In or Sign Up

If You Do Not Have an NY.gov ID

To access the transaction without creating or logging in to an NY.gov ID, you will need the same information as above, but you will need to provide that information again if you need to change your address at a later date.

You will also be asked to create shared secrets for use on future visits.

If you need help with online transactions, visit our page about online transactions.
