About LENS
The License Event Notification Service (LENS) can supply important information about the driving qualifications of drivers that you employ or regulate. Organizations that use LENS can quickly identify their problem drivers, and focus efforts to improve safety and decrease vulnerability.
LENS can notify you about the following events when they post to your drivers’ license records:
- accidents (reportable)
- convictions
- expirations
- HazMat (Hazardous Material) endorsement changes
- MedCert (Medical Certification) status changes
- Point and Insurance Reduction Program completions
- license status changes
- suspensions and revocations

Apply for LENS
To apply for LENS, you must submit an application online. Allow 2 weeks for DMV to process the application.
You will need the following information for your organization and its contact person.
Organization
- Short description of the intended use of LENS
- Business Name
- Federal Employer Identification Number (Tax ID number)
- Paying or exempt status
- Street Address
- Estimated number of drivers you plan to monitor
- Previous or other existing search account numbers (if applicable)
Contact Person
- Name
- ID number on your New York State DMV-issued driver license, learner permit, or non-driver ID (see a sample) or the license number located on your license issued by a state other than New York
- Phone number
After we approve your LENS application, we will send you your LENS customer number and your LENS username by email. Our welcome message will provide instructions for funding the account (if applicable), selecting LENS notification types, and adding drivers to LENS.
For security, the LENS password will be mailed separately to the home address of the contact person. We mail the password letter on the same day we send the welcome email. Please wait for the password letter to arrive before attempting to log in to LENS. Paying customers must send a payment to DMV after receiving the organization’s 7-digit escrow account number. You will not be able to add drivers or
Please know that LENS will not replace your organization’s 19-A Monitoring Service. LENS is a separate and distinct service from the 19-A Monitoring Service. See information for how your organization can monitor your 19-A regulated drivers.
Pricing
LENS is a prepaid service. When you apply for LENS, estimate how many drivers you plan to monitor and plan to pay $10 per driver to DMV. When DMV accepts your application, we will send instructions for depositing your payment into an escrow account. After you fund your account, you will be able to add drivers.
If you currently have an escrow account for Dial-In or 19-A, you can use the same escrow account to also pay for LENS. Enter the account number when you register for LENS.

Exemptions from LENS Fees
New York State Vehicle and Traffic Law designates that the following customers may be exempt from record search fees for searches/copies of documents to be used for a public purpose:
- public officers, board or body
- volunteer fire companies
- volunteer ambulance services
- legal aid bureau, society, or other private entity when acting under section 722 of the county law
Escrow Account Statements
When you apply for LENS and are not exempt from fees, we set up an escrow account to hold your opening deposit and subsequent payments for service. We use the contact information from your LENS application to address your account statements. Your escrow account number and balance will be visible on the main menu after you log onto the LENS website.
