Using LENS
Logging In
When DMV creates a LENS roster, we issue a personal user ID and password to the applicant. If your organization has more than one person who may use LENS, we will issue additional user IDs. Every LENS user may, and should, have a personal user ID. Please do not share your user ID or password with others.
To get another user ID, please contact LENS support with all of the following information:
- the 5-digit LENS customer number
- NY State Driver license/non-driver ID number
- business telephone number
- business email address
We will
- send the user ID to the user’s business email address
- mail the password to the user’s personal license/ID mailing address
The password is the only LENS information that we ever send to a user’s mailing address. We will not send a password to an office address.
Login Troubleshooting
Incorrect User ID or Password

- Please close all your browsers
- Open one browser window
- Return to NYS DMV Secure Log-on - VPASS
- Try logging in again.
Note: If you continue to see this error, you may be using an incorrect user ID. Please double-check your user ID.
Locked User ID

If you place more than three attempts with an incorrect password, your user ID will become “locked”. You can create a new password by using “Automated Password Reset”. However, “Automated Password Reset” is only useful if you enroll before you have difficulty with your logon. If you had earlier enrolled in Automated Password Reset, a dialog will present three questions. Answer them correctly and your browser will display a replacement password.
Update Contact Information
- log in to LENS
- follow the “Modify/View Customer Profile” link from your LENS main menu
- correct your information and select the “Update” button to save your changes
Adding and Removing Users
When DMV creates a LENS roster, we issue a personal user ID and password to the applicant. If your organization has more than one person who may use LENS, we will gladly issue additional user IDs. Every LENS user may, and should, have their own personal logon. Please do not share your login or password with others.
Add a User
To get an additional user ID, please send an email to [email protected]. In the body of the email, please include all of the following:
- your 5-digit LENS roster number
- the user’s NY State Driver license/non-driver ID number
- the user's full name
- the business name
- the user's business address
- the user’s business telephone number
- the user’s business email address
We will
- send the user ID to the user’s business email address, and
- mail the password to the user’s personal license/ID mailing address.
The password is the only LENS information that we ever send to a user’s personal mailing address. We will not send a password to an office address.
Remove a User
If a LENS user leaves your organization you can remove them by completing the following steps:
- log on to LENS
- visit the LENS Main Menu and select Customer Information
- select User Profile Maintenance
- click “Search” to list all of your LENS users
- find the departing user and check the corresponding “Remove” box. Click “Process”.
If a LENS user leaves your organization and you cannot log in to LENS, please send an email to [email protected]. Identify the user and your LENS customer number. We will disable the departed user’s access to your LENS roster.
How do I change users?
If someone is taking on another user’s duties, follow the instructions in the topic above for requesting additional user IDs. Do not share the former user’s ID and password with the new user. We will not provide support to any person who is using another person’s user ID. We may revoke shared user IDs upon discovery.
Adding and Dropping Drivers
Add Drivers to Your Roster
- From your main menu, under the Driver Maintenance column, select "Add driver."
- On the following page, enter the DMV ID number (Client ID) from the driver license of each driver you are adding and hit the "Add Driver" button. Adding the Customer Index is optional.
- After you add a driver to your roster, LENS will display a page with brief details of that driver, and a "Click here to display driving record now" button to save/print/email that driver's record.
NOTE: Be sure to save/print/email driving records on the same day that you add a driver. After the day you add a driver to LENS, you will be charged a search fee for any additional driving record you order.
Removing Drivers From Your Roster
- Log into your LENS account.
- Select "Drop Drivers" from your LENS Main Menu.
- Find the driver you wish to drop from the list that appears or enter their license number or last name in the fields provided. Click "Search."
- Click the blue button to the left of the driver’s name.
- Click "Drop Driver" to remove the driver.
Out-of-State Drivers
The LENS program can notify you only of New York State driver record events. For complete information, you will need to contact the driver's home state for its record.
To see if a New York license or ID number has been assigned to your out-of-state driver, please contact LENS with the driver's name, date of birth, and the state they are licensed in. If we find a license or ID number, we will send it to you and you can add it to your roster.
LENS can notify you of an event on a record belonging to a driver licensed by another state if either of the following conditions are true:
- The driver was convicted of a violation within New York State. When a driver visiting New York State accrues a conviction, we will search for an existing New York State record and add the conviction to it. We will create a new record for the driver to denote the conviction if none exists. The new records will include the notation “NO NY LICENSE.”
- The driver’s New York State driving privilege has been suspended. When a driver visiting New York State fails to answer a summons from a court in New York State, the court may direct us to suspend the driving privilege. We will search for an existing New York State record and suspend it. We will create a new record for the driver to denote the suspension if none exists. The new record will include the notation “NO NY LICENSE”. We will also notify the driver’s home state of the suspension.
