Estimate Registration Fees and Taxes

About

Vehicle registration fees are calculated based on many factors. You can also use these charts to estimate your registration fees, use taxes, and supplemental fees for passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles.

If this is the original registration (the first time you register your vehicle), you must pay the following:

  • annual registration fee
  • vehicle plate fee - $25 for standard plates (or $12.50 for a vehicle that has one plate)
  • county use tax – based on county and vehicle weight
  • sales tax (see sales tax information)
  • title certificate fee of $50.00
  • supplemental Metropolitan Commuter Transportation District (MCTD) fee for the following 12 counties only:  Bronx, Kings (Brooklyn), New York (Manhattan), Queens, Richmond (Staten Island), Dutchess, Nassau, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Suffolk, and Westchester, $50 for two years ($25 per year)

If you transfer the registration and plates from another vehicle, you don’t need to pay the plate fees or MCTD fee, and you may be able to transfer the registration fees to your new vehicle.

Key Factors Determining Registration Fees

Due to the number of variables, it can be hard to calculate the exact cost to register your vehicle in New York State. Some of the factors that go into registration fees are:

  • vehicle weight: heavier vehicles often result in higher fees.
  • vehicle type: different fee schedules apply to different types of vehicles, such as passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, and trailers.
  • county of residence: the county where you register the vehicle will affect the total cost.
  • fuel type: the type of fuel your vehicle uses is a component of the calculation.
  • cylinders: the number of cylinders in the engine (for some vehicles) can be a factor.
  • registration period: your registration can be issued for one or two years, with a corresponding cost difference.
  • plate type: standard registration plates have different fees than custom or specialty plates.
  • vehicle usage: different registration classes have different fee structures.
  • commercial vehicles: the maximum gross weight affects the total cost.
  • for-hire vehicles: the vehicle’s seating capacity is a factor which affects the total cost.

Estimate Fees and Taxes Online

The online estimates do not include the sales tax. You do not need to pay sales tax when you register if you show DMV acceptable proof that you paid the sales tax when you bought the vehicle, or if the registration is tax exempt. See sales tax information.

Trailer and Boat Registration Fees

You cannot use the online service to estimate fees and taxes for trailers or boats.

Trailer and boat registration fees are calculated differently. See register a trailer, or register a boat for how to estimate these registration fees.
