Overview
To apply for a new vehicle title (but not registration or plates), you will need the following documents:
- Application for Title Only (PDF) (MV-82TON) or Vehicle Registration/Title Application (PDF) (MV-82)
- Proof of ownership (including any applicable lien release)
- The most commonly accepted proof of purchase price is a Statement of Transaction (PDF) (DTF-802) (on the New York State Department of Tax and Finance's website). Both the seller and the buyer must complete the Affidavit of Sale/Statement.
- Proof of name and date of birth
- Sales tax clearance or sales tax payment - Retail Certificate of Sale (MV-50) or a receipt for sales tax payment (FS-6T)
- The title certificate fee of $50.00 (the title fee for a Manufactured Home is $125) by check or money order, payable to the Commissioner of Motor Vehicles.
Bring these documents to your local DMV office or mail them to the address below.
Applications for Garage person's Liens, Salvage Certificates, manufactured home titles, boat titles, bonded vehicles, and applications by dealers or manufacturers for vehicles returned by purchasers under the Lemon Law must be mailed to Title Services.
