Vehicle Registration Renewal
You can renew your registration online and print a 10-day document to use until your new registration arrives in the mail. Please note: If your vehicle has been altered or stretched to increase the number of passengers or if there are other special circumstances, you cannot renew your registration online.
You can also renew by mail or make an appointment to renew at the DMV.
Renew your registration before it expires
- renewing early will not change the new expiration date for your new registration
- members of the Armed Forces may have more time to renew (see automatic license and registration extension for military personnel)
You cannot renew a registration that
- is suspended or revoked
- is expired for more than 1 year (you will need to re-register this vehicle at a DMV office or by mail)
- has not been inspected in the past 12 months
Renew By Mail
If you have a renewal notice
Mail the bottom part of your registration renewal notice (MV-3 or OP-3) to the address listed on the notice. Include a personal check or money order payable to 'Commissioner of Motor Vehicles' for the fee.
If you do not have a renewal notice (MV-3 or OP-3)
Use the Vehicle Registration / Title Application (PDF) (MV-82). If you do not know the correct amount to renew, send a check payable to 'Commissioner of Motor Vehicles', but do not write the amount.
Mail the MV-82 and your payment to
New York State Department of Motor Vehicles
Utica Processing Center
P.O. Box 359
Utica, NY 13503
Renew at a DMV Office
Bring your registration renewal notice (MV-3 or OP-3) and payment to a DMV office. If you do not have your MV-3 or OP3, complete the Vehicle Registration / Title Application (PDF) (MV-82).
Office Procedures Have Changed Due to COVID-19
We recommend you conduct your DMV business at the office or by mail in the County where you are a resident.
